Vic: More railway stopwork meetings, but trains will run OK
More stopwork meetings are planned by staff on Melbourne's suburban train network today,
to discuss cost-cutting plans by train operator Connex.
But Rail, Tram and Bus Union Victorian secretary TREVOR DOBBYN says the meetings will
be staggered through the day and there'll be no disruption to peak-hour services.
Union delegates will meet staff to inform them about the company's plans, which could
include the axing of almost 100 jobs.
Connex says it wants to cut costs because it's expecting an earnings shortfall of $70
million in the next three years.
The company, which operates six train lines in Melbourne's north and east, has blamed
the GST, fare evaders and problems with ticketing machines for its reduced revenues.
