NSW: Gale force winds cause widespread damage

Strong winds are lashing Australia's eastern seaboard, with numerous reports of damageand one death.

In Sydney one person has been killed and two others trapped after a tree was blownonto a car at St Ives in the city's north.

Live power lines were also brought down at the scene.

The State Emergency Service has received at least 800 calls for help, with problemsoccurring north of Sydney to Taree, west to Orange and also down the south coast.

SES spokesman PETER O'NEILL says the gale force winds are expected to continue untilat least tonight.

In Canberra, meanwhile, the winds have brought down powerlines and started a housefire in the suburb of Lyneham.

A police spokesman says one person has been treated for mild shock after fire brokeout in the roof of the Wattle St house at 12.40pm.

The spokesman says wind gusting at 50-to-60 kilometres an hour brought down two powerlineswhich sparked the blaze.
