ADELAIDE, April 25 AAP - An Adelaide woman who was forced into prostitution by theJapanese during World War II today received the RSL's peace prize.

Jan Ruff-O'Herne, a grandmother from Kingswood in Adelaide's south, today receivedthe award for her tireless efforts in raising awareness of the suffering endured by the"comfort women".

Mrs Ruff-O'Herne has been campaigning particularly in the past decade, after she brokeher silence on her experiences to a tribunal in Tokyo, said Flinders University seniorlaw lecturer and Mrs Ruff-O'Herne's sometime travel partner Tina Dolgopol.

"(Today's award) is because of her willingness to campaign on behalf of the comfortwomen and to tell her story about her experiences during the Second World War," said MsDolgopol.
