SA: Scooter injuries on the rise

State Attorney General TREVOR GRIFFIN says children are being injured on scooters at
an increasing rate in South Australia.

Mr GRIFFIN says Adelaide's Women's and Children's Hospital treated 40 children for
scooter-related injuries between January and October this year.

He says the growing popularity of scooters has resulted in a marked increase in injuries,
81 per cent of the injuries are children under the age of 15.

Mr GRIFFIN says in the lead up to Christmas the state government is warning people
about the possible dangers of scooters.

He says it's essential that if parents are going to buy their children a scooter they
should first consider the possible risks the child will face."

Mr GRIFFIN says faulty scooters have contributed to some of the injuries.

He says the Office of Consumer and Business Affairs has received 36 complaints about
scooters since the start of October, mostly to do with collapsing handle bars and steering
columns.
