NSW: Brogden attempts suicide

SYDNEY, Aug 31 AAP - Disgraced former New South Wales Liberal leader JOHN BROGDEN has
attempted suicide.

Network Nine said Mr Brogden was receiving treatment but his condition was understood
not to be life threatening.

His office refused to comment.

The former state Liberal Party leader was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital by ambulance
in the early hours of this morning.

The state opposition leader resigned in disgrace on Monday for a racial slur against
the wife of former premier BOB CARR.

Mr Brogden, one of Australia's most senior Liberal leaders, admitted he had acted inappropriately
at a Sydney function by referring to Malaysian-born Helena Carr as a "mail-order bride".

He also apologised for pinching a female journalist on the bottom and propositioning
another at the same function.

And early today, new claims of inappropriate behaviour by Mr Brodgen were made in Sydney's
Daily Telegraph newspaper.
